Let's get you set up
This guide takes you from your purchase email to your first paste in a few minutes. Every step has a picture of what you'll see.
macOS 12 Monterey or later · Apple silicon & Intel
Get the app and your license key
Right after you paid, Dodo Payments emailed you a receipt. It links to your customer portal, where your download and license key are waiting.
Open your purchase email
Search your inbox for Dodo Payments. The subject is “Payment Successful for order at PasteBuddy”. Not there? Check Spam or Promotions. Under Your Digital Products & Entitlements, click Access in your Customer Portal.
Find PasteBuddy in the portal
Your portal lists everything you bought under Entitlements. There are two rows: PasteBuddy for Mac (the download) and PasteBuddy license key.
Download the app and copy your key
Click View next to PasteBuddy for Mac, then the download button next to PasteBuddy.dmg. It saves to your Downloads folder. Then click View next to PasteBuddy license key and use the copy button. You'll paste the key in step 4.
Move it into Applications
Open PasteBuddy.dmg from Downloads. A window opens with PasteBuddy on the left and your Applications folder on the right.
- Drag the PasteBuddy icon onto the Applications folder. It copies in a second.
- Close the window, then eject the PasteBuddy disk from the Finder sidebar. You can delete the
.dmgfrom Downloads afterwards.
Open PasteBuddy for the first time
The first time you open an app you downloaded from the web, macOS asks you to approve it in System Settings. It takes about a minute, and you only ever do it once.
Open PasteBuddy from Applications
Open your Applications folder and double-click PasteBuddy, or press ⌘ Space and type “PasteBuddy”. macOS shows a short message. Click Done.
Approve it in System Settings
Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner and choose System Settings, then Privacy & Security. Scroll down to the Security section. You'll see a line about PasteBuddy. Click Open Anyway.
Confirm and you're in
Use Touch ID or type your Mac's password. If macOS asks once more, click Open Anyway. PasteBuddy opens its welcome window, and from now on it opens like any other app.
Activate with your license key
The welcome window asks for your license key. It needs the internet once to activate, then works offline for good.
- Paste the key you copied from your customer portal (⌘ V). Lost it? Open the portal from your email again and click View next to PasteBuddy license key.
- Click Activate. That's it: no account, no sign-in, and nothing to renew.
- One key works on up to 3 of your Macs.
Let PasteBuddy paste for you
Pressing ↵ on a clip pastes it straight into the app you were using. For that, macOS needs your OK in the Accessibility list.
Your clipboard history is never uploaded. PasteBuddy has no account and no tracking.
Access lets PasteBuddy press ⌘V for you in the app you were using. Nothing else.
Switch it off in the same Settings page any time.
Click the button in the welcome window
It reads Open Accessibility settings and opens the right page in System Settings for you.
Switch PasteBuddy on
Find PasteBuddy in the list and turn its switch on, then confirm with Touch ID or your password. If PasteBuddy isn't in the list, click + at the bottom and choose it from Applications.
Skipped this? PasteBuddy still works: ↵ copies the clip and you press ⌘ V yourself.
Copy a few things, then paste
PasteBuddy lives in your menu bar and remembers everything you copy from now on.
- Copy a few things as you normally would: text, links, code, screenshots, files.
- Press ⌘ ⇧ V in any app. Type to search, use the arrow keys, and press ↵ to paste.
- Paste several in a row: press ⇧ ↵ on a few clips to queue them, then ⌃ ⌘ V pastes each next one.
- Make it yours in Settings (click the menu bar icon): history size, launch at login, your own shortcut, excluded apps and more.
If something's not right
macOS says PasteBuddy is “damaged”+
That's macOS being cautious with apps from outside the App Store. Open Terminal, paste xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/PasteBuddy.app, press ↵, then open PasteBuddy again.
↵ copies but doesn't paste+
PasteBuddy needs Accessibility access to paste for you (step 5). If it's already on, switch PasteBuddy off and back on in the list. macOS sometimes forgets it after an update.
Activation fails+
Check you're online and that you pasted the whole key with no spaces. A key works on 3 Macs: to move it, open PasteBuddy's Settings on the old Mac and click Deactivate.
Nothing happens when I press ⌘⇧V+
Make sure PasteBuddy is running (its icon is in the menu bar). Another app may use the same shortcut: pick a different one in PasteBuddy's Settings.
